The benefits of yoga provide instant gratification and a lasting transformation. I played highschool and college football until I had a serious shoulder injury. The pain and lack of mobility was devastating to me after being a college athlete. A year after surgery I started taking yoga to rebuild my strength and reduce the pain in my shoulders. Honestly, I was nervous entering new workout genre dominated by women. This was uncharted territory. What I found was room full of active people, athletes, middle-aged moms, older gentlemen, and even fitness buffs. Everyone can feel accepted and included and unlike other sports or classes that focus on niche clients, yoga is adaptable to all who come. Yoga changed me physically and mentally right away. I saw healing in my shoulder and my mind. I decided to start teaching classes and continue to practice for my long-term health. I studied B.K.S Inyengar and learned the foundations of vinyasa yoga.
I have been teaching yoga for over 10 years now. I’m always looking to reach more people and inspire them to live a healthy lifestyle. Social media has taken over the world and opened up new ways to reach the masses. I started sharing my yoga practice and events on Instagram; and this past year I had the opportunity to do a photo shoot with socialite Ashley Darby. Ashley recruited us to represent her Zen Gem clothing line. She has a exuberant energy around her that was contagious during the outdoor shoot. It was an amazing experience to do yoga with other teachers chosen from around the DMV area. There was a sense of competition to be in front of the camera. Imagine six talented yogis performing there favorite yoga poses and one camera man snapping away. I saw many unique styles and techniques; all expressed the peace and tranquility achieved through focused training. The photoshoot was a reminder of the power of creativity and focus. Till this day I feel a renewed sense of passion for my yoga practice. I look to push past the norms and perceived boundaries of yoga and share my unique experience with my students. Everyone should know there are no limitations when it comes to practicing yoga.
